Longing
Moonlight rested on the river, Which waters ran, so cold and deep. No sound. Not a distant quiver Of grass, of leaves. All was in sleep. She sat there, on the river’s shore, Of someone’s sorrow lonely ghost. And like a young tree, with dead core, In sadness was her frail soul lost. Once charming smile was on her face, With ribands was adorn’d her hair, Her raiment was as light as lace And she was passionate and fair. But time did flee, for many years She sought for love, alas, in vain. In endless rivers of her tears, She drown’d her loneliness and pain. Long in the woods she strayed in grief, Which her unhappy lot befell. The time had shattered her belief And to her dreams she bid farewell. She walk’d in darkness with no fear And listen’d to the songs of wind, That sings the truth one cannot hear, Though it does echo in one’s mind. She wand’red by the paths unseen, But as a ghost of something fair, That was now lost in forests dim With her best friend – silent despair. “Thy tears are shed on grassy ground For thy soul yearns for light and love; And lovely skylark’s solemn sound Does make thou lift thine eyes above” 29 June 2006
